Connections

The Tampere Railway Station Area Development Project will change familiar traffic connections at the very centre of the city. However, the aim is to keep the same temporary arrangements in place for as long as possible to make it easier for city residents to adopt the new routes into everyday use. Below, you will find information on the exceptional routes as well as instructions on the appropriate channels to contact in case you need more information on switching between modes of transport.

Walking

Pedestrian through-traffic is advised to use the Travel Centre tunnel, Rongankatu as well as the Sorinsilta bridge. The Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass, the Asematunneli station tunnel that runs inside the station next to the underpass, as well as the Erkkilän silta overbridge are closed to traffic. The section of Ratapihankatu between Tulli and Tammela is open to traffic but will be rerouted to a narrower bypass in the railway yard.

Cycling

Cyclists are advised to use the newly improved Rongankatu underpass and the Sorinsilta overbridge for through-traffic. The Erkkilän silta bridge and Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass are closed to bicycle traffic. Ratapihankatu between Tulli and Tammela is open to traffic but will be rerouted to a narrower bypass in the railway yard.

Motor traffic

You can drive across the area via either Lapintie or the Sorinsilta bridge. The Erkkilän silta bridge and the Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass are closed to traffic at the same time during the summertime until 10 August 2025 .Ratapihankatu is open for motor traffic but rerouted to a narrower bypass in the railway yard.

Tram

The tram will run as usual via the Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass despite the construction work. From the tram stop on Hämeenkatu, you can access the railway station and trains as usual, but when coming from the Tulli tram stop, you need to take a detour through the Travel Centre tunnel. More information on the tramlines and schedules are available on the Nysse.fi website.

Buses

The Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass is closed to all motor traffic right now, and buses no. 6, 29, 42, 90, 93 and 95 that normally use the underpass are rerouted for the summer onto a temporary detour between Tulli and the city centre. The construction work will have no effect on the services on bus lines 11, 13, 26 and 103 that run on Rautatienkatu. You can check the detailed schedules and routes on the Nysse website.

Trains

Train service is running as usual right now despite the construction, only the car-loading dock is not in use until  the 13th of December. More information is found on the VR website.

At the railway station

Now is a good time to pay close attention to the instructions on how to get around at the railway station – the connections to long-distance trains are up and running despite the construction work, but there are some changes that affect the access and connections in the area. From the direction of Hämeenkatu, the station can be accessed as usual, while all access from the direction of Tammela and Tulli is directed through the Travel Centre tunnel.

Future connections

The construction work will impact the connections in and around the station area now, but the improvements will be worth waiting for. The development of the Station District aims to create the smoothest exchanges between, for example, trams and long-distance trains through a convenient new travel terminal, as well as between underground parking and the services offered in the city centre.
