Station District

The Station District is a new urban part of the city that is taking shape around Tampere Railway Station, with housing, jobs, a raised park, as well as smoother travel chains in the plans for the area. All of the most significant city centre development targets are located in this area.

The Station District comprises the railway station and its surroundings, as well as three deck structures that are to be constructed above the Tampere passenger railway yard and of the high-rises to be erected in connection with these structures. The first of the three decks, the South Deck to the south of the Kalevantie road, was completed in 2020, and two high-rises and the Nokia Arena have already been completed on top of it. Next in line are the North Deck with its high-rise development that is to be built on the other side of Kalevantie, as well as the Travel and Service Centre deck and the high-rises that are to be erected in connection with the railway station.

What’s next?

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has launched the renewal of the Tampere passenger railway yard. In connection with the renewal, the Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass and the old indoor station tunnel will be combined into a spacious travel terminal with a tram stop and smooth connections to the station platforms, P-Hämppi underground parking, bicycle parking, as well as the bus platforms that are in the plans for the current Pakkahuoneenaukio square.

A city reaching towards the sky

The Station District is included in Tampere’s tall construction zone, giving the area a particularly urban image. Daniel Libeskind’s unique architecture, with its high-rises, opens up new soaring views over the growing city. In the future, the high-rises will settle in naturally around the heritage-listed station building within this built environment that is rich with cultural and historical value, reaching high towards the sky just like our growing city.

In the middle of everything

The Station District is located at the very heart of Tampere, at the node of all modes of transport. When completed, the district will link the eastern and western parts of the city, forming a modern city centre. The busy passenger railway yard will remain in the middle of the new urban blocks, connecting seamlessly with the tramline through a new travel terminal.

Green and pleasant

The many projects involved in the development of the Station District will transform the surroundings of the railway yard into a pleasant hub of work, recreation and experiences. The aim of the development is to create a greener, impressive whole with a public raised park built on top of the railway yard.
