27.5.2026 The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency informs that the renewal of the Tampere railway station area -project will close the Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass to all traffic except the tramway from 1 June 2026. The closure will last until the completion of the project in 2031. Over the next few years, the Tampere railway station area will undergo a major transformation. Traffic arrangements will remain largely unchanged from here on out.

8.5.2026 Tampere is about to embark on another major urban development project as work begins on the Yliopistontunneli tunnel. The tunnel will open up a new underground access road from Viinikankatu and will enable both the development of the Station District and other major projects in the city centre in the future.

5.12.2025 The plan includes the construction of a new hotel building to expand the Torni Hotel on the east side of Tampere railway yard, in connection with the southern locomotive shed. On 2 December 2025, the Committee for City Planning and Infrastructure Services decided to open the detailed plan proposal to the public. The plan material will be available for public review from 4 December.

31.7.2025 The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency informs that Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass, which was closed at the beginning of June, will be opened to motor vehicle traffic earlier than announced, already on Tuesday 5 August 2025. Pedestrians and cyclists are still prohibited from using the underpass. The changes are related to developing the Tampere railway station area.

23.5.2025 A new hotel building is planned for the east side of Tampere railway yard alongside the already completed Torni Hotel in the southern locomotive shed. The two draft options for the location of the hotel extension, including the developed reference plan, will be open to the public from 22 May to 12 June 2025.
