Travel terminal

The Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass and the Asematunneli tunnel inside the railway station will be combined into a spacious and pleasant travel terminal that offers, for example, swift exchanges between the tram and long-distance trains. The travel terminal will boast new commercial premises and services as well as more convenient pedestrian connections to the station platforms. The biggest change in the terminal will be the new tram stop that is to be built in the underpass.

RAILWAY BRIDGES TO BE RENOVATED

Why will construction take 5 years?

The Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass that is under renovations runs beneath not just one but five bridge structures, namely the Ratapihankatu road bridge and four busy railway bridges. The bridges will be renovated at a rate of one per year in order to prevent longer downtimes in rail traffic and to keep train services to and from across Finland up and running.
