Tampere Railway Station Area Development Project

This Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency project will renew the passenger railway yard and station terminal located in the Tampere city centre, improving their functionality for passengers and trains alike. After the completion of the project, exchanges between various modes of transport in the surroundings of the station will be easy, swift and barrier-free, and the area will be safe and pleasant to get around in.

Development targets

In connection with the Tampere Railway Station Development Project, several significant sites in the station’s surroundings will undergo a renewal. The work will spread out over several years.

Travel terminal

The Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass and the Asematunneli tunnel running inside the railway station will be combined into a spacious and pleasant travel terminal featuring, for example, a new tram stop.

Erkkilän silta

The Erkkilän silta overbridge will be renewed, significantly improving the traffic conditions and safety on the bridge: pedestrians, bicycles and motor traffic will all receive their own separate lanes.

Tracks and carriage maintenance

The project will also entail extensive work involving carriage maintenance, the track structures and standing stock, which will be carried out outside the Station District on the track sections located in the Perkiö and Naistenlahti areas.

Why is the passenger railway yard under renewal?

Tampere is one of Finland’s busiest exchange stations, and the station is the first showcase of the city for visitors arriving by train. The station area and tracks are currently under pressure from both heavy traffic and outdated solutions, which the renewal project now seeks to address and update.

Protected station building

No changes will be made in the project to the facade of the station building – the heritage-listed building will remain as it is, a familiar Tampere landmark instantly recognisable as it stands at the end of the Hämeenkatu street view.

Important element in a developing area

The passenger railway yard renewal is a key element in the development of the entire Station District. Together with the other ongoing projects in the area, the changes made in the passenger railway yard and station terminal make Station District the most important development project in central Tampere, turning it into a new urban part of the city centre.

Construction in the project will be implemented through an alliance formed by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and Kreate Oy. The project will be implemented in two phases: the contract for the first phase of construction was signed on 27 March 2025, and the decision regarding the launch of the second phase will be made during 2026. In addition to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the clients in the project include, through separate agreements, the City of Tampere, Fintraffic Railway Ltd and VR Group Plc.
